OMC mechanic question please -?

I have a late model (maybe 1999) Johnson 35hp outboard - I wanted to replace the thermostat if its not too difficult - can someone tell me where its at, how to get to it & replace it, and maybe how much one costs for this motor? Thanks !!
"Works 4" is it really THAT difficult ? I know I can always take it to the dealer and pay through the nose and get anything replaced. I did not think thermostat was that hard, but maybe it is from what you are saying? Anyone else ??
to answer the 3rd person's question as to "why are replacing the thermostat" - the motor acted funny this spring when we first ran it, it started good, ran smooth, and strong water coming out of pee hole for first 1/2 hour of use, then when motor got real warmed up & hot, the water stopped coming out the pee hole and the Temperature light came on the gauge, etc. So we shut her down. Someone had suggested to me it may be the thermostat causing this problem?

Nothing quite so irritating as asking "how do I", and getting the answer, "Don't."

Don't worry, this is well within the scope of the average do-it-yourselfer. In fact, this motor requires almost no maintenance that can't be done DIY with a little determination, a few basic tools, and a service manual.

The manual will give you important information, like what kind of sealants or lubricants to use where, torque values for fasteners, that sort of thing. (Couple tips: When the manual calls for OMC Adhesive M, substitute 3m 847 or Permatex #2; when it calls for OMC Thread Lock, use blue Locktite; OMC gasket sealant on fasteners, use any anti-sieze compound).

Highly recommend the factory service manual, available from kencook.com, marineengine.com, iboats.com.

Seloc and clymers manuals are ok, but cover many years and many models, so it's hit or miss whether the illustrations will look like yours.

I get most of my parts from iboats.com or ishopmarine.com the rest I get from the local dealer.

Why are you replacing the thermostat? Cooling issues? Do the water pump, too.

edit -- that motor will pee whether the thermostat is open or not. When it stops peeing, that usually means the water pump isn't pumping (although, steam in the water jacket will cause that sometimes).

Myself, I wouldn't even consider starting the motor again until I'd inspected the water pump. New impeller for sure, and new housing if the inside is scored or scratched at all.

You can test the thermostat in a pot of water on the stove with a kitchen thermometer - just watch to see when it opens. It'll have the temp stamped right on it.

But I wouldn't bother unless the new water pump doesn't fix it.

[btw, I replace the impeller every 2-3 years, too. that's one thing you want to replace *before* any symptoms.]
