Diesel or Gas - Loud Smoking Dinosaur or Fuel Gulping Monster
In this article I'm comparing the diesel and the gas engine and discuss their differences. I'm specifically referring to their use in automobiles.
From a distance the gas and the diesel engines seem to function in about the same way. Fuel manufactured from refined crude burns in the cylinder forcing the piston to move from the resulting pressure. The movement of the piston is transferred to the wheels through the crankshaft, the gearbox and through the transmission.
It's when we look at the engines a little closer that we start to notice that there are differences. Difference in fuel economy, smell, vibration, expected age and price just to name a few.
With a gas engine there is an ignition system that uses high voltage electricity with wiring and spark plugs. The diesel does not need this, it compresses the fuel/air mixture until it's so hot it ignites all by itself. In the gas engine it's the spark plug that ignites the fuel-air mixture through a high voltage spark at the right time.
Also separating the diesel and gas engines is the fact that gas engines mix the fuel vapor with air in the intake manfold before it's entering the cylinder. The air/fuel mixture is then sucked into the cylinder and is burned the next time the piston passes the compression stage.
On the other hand the diesel engine sucks fresh air into the cylinder and lets the piston compress it to maximum pressure. At this time when the air is compressed and hot enough to ignite the fuel, diesel is injected directly into the cylinder (or a small space connected to the cylinder) through high pressure nozzles. The high temperature of the cylinder instantly ignites the fuel.
The different fuel injection and combustion lets the diesel work more efficiently than a gasoline burner. That's why diesels have better fuel efficiency than it's gas burning relatives.
I'm not saying that a diesel engine is better. It's different, it has drawbacks too. A diesel engine is usually slow to start in cold, and especially in freezing weather. If you remember it was compressed hot air that ignited the fuel. If it's cold enough outside the air will not become hot enough and it will not ignite the fuel, then the engine will not start.
To handle this diesels have something called glow plugs for handling cold start situations. Electrical power from the accumulator is used to preheat the glow plugs inside the cylinders before the engine is started. That way the fuel is ignited by the hot glow plugs while the cylinder and air is still too cold to do it. A couple of seconds after the engine has started it is usually hot enough to ignite the fuel without the help of the glow plugs and these are not used again until the next cold start.
This is one of the things that might bother you when having a diesel engine in the car. The glowing takes from a couple of second to half a minute and can easily lead to stress when in a hurry. You just have to wait until it's done or the car won't start. On a modern engine the glowing does not take long, it might not even be required, and you'll soon get accustomed to it.
Lets look at the practical differences between the gas engine and the diesel engine. The diesel engine is large and loud and it produces clouds of black strinking smoke when accelerating. It also has a sturdier construction due to the higher pressures it must handle and thus can often go twice as many miles as a gas engine during it's lifetime. The sturdier construction also makes it more expensive when first bought.
The Gas Engine
- More quiet that the diesel
- Better acceleration and higher top speed
- Uses an Ignition System with Spark Plugs to Light The Fuel
- Adds fuel to the air before letting it into the cylinder
- Not as sturdy as a diesel. Lower price but breaks down faster
- Gas readily available everywhere
- Gas Mileage is poor compared to a diesel
The Diesel Engine
- Loud noise, may sound like a truck or agricultural machine
- Slow acceleration (get one with turbo charger, that helps)
- Top speed is nothing to brag about but there should be no problem maintaining the speed limit in most places
- Uses glow plugs to make the fuel ignite when the engine is cold
- Lets clean air into the cylinders and injects the fuel oil later
- Engine is simple and robust. Higher price but runs many miles
- Emits black smoke when loading it (like a quick acceleration)
- Can be converted to run on Eco fuel oils
- Has a great gas mileage
If I where to give you advice on selecting either a gas or a diesel powered car I would tell you this: Get a diesel if you drive long trips and can live with the small nuisances of more noise and poor acceleration. Get a gas powered car if you drive less than average or if you just want the comfort at any price.
How to find a faulty wire in the ignition wiring?
My truck died and now won't turn over, there is power bu no crank. Tested starter and it works, so there must be a wiring problem in the ignition system somewhere. But where to look?

Igniting a Spark
Your Volvo has thousands of parts in it. Some play a crucial role in the car, while others do not. Some are used all the time, while some are needed only for a specific time.
One of the latter is your Volvo's ignition coil. Also called a spark coil, the ignition coil is an induction coil in the automobile's ignition system. The Volvo ignition coil transforms a storage battery's 12 volts into the thousands (which sometimes could reach as high as 120,000 volts) needed to ignite the spark plugs.
Invented by A. Kent Atwater in 1921, the ignition coil is a simple transformer that has two sides: the 12 volt or primary side and the high voltage or secondary side. The primary side contains a few hundred turns of a large diameter wire and it builds up the magnetic field in the coils. On the other hand, the high voltage side contains thousands of turns of small diameter wire. The coil uses “electromagnetic induction” to create the high voltage. When the voltage in the primary side is turned off, the collapsing magnetic field in the secondary side induces a voltage in the secondary side, producing thousands of volts.
In older vehicles, a single, large ignition coil would serve all the spark plugs, distributing voltage via an ignition distributor. In modern systems, the distributor is omitted and ignition is controlled electronically, instead. Much smaller coils are used with one coil for each spark plug or one coil serving two spark plugs (so two coils in a four-cylinder car). These coils may be remote-mounted or they may be placed on top of the spark plug (coil-on-plug or direct injection). Where one coil serves two spark plugs (in two cylinders), it is through the "wasted spark" system.
In this arrangement, the coil generates two sparks per cycle to both the cylinders. The fuel in the cylinder that is nearing the end of its compression stroke is ignited, whereas, the spark in its companion nearing the end of its exhaust stroke has no effect. The wasted spark system is more reliable than a single coil system with a distributor and cheaper than coil-on-plug.
Where the coils are remote mounted, they may all be contained in a single molded block with multiple high-tension terminals. This is commonly called a coil-pack.
Your Volvo ignition coils are part of a larger system, which is the ignition system. The ignition system is part of an even larger engine system. The ignition system's primary responsibility is the timely burning of the fuel-air mixture in the engine. Your Volvo user's manual would carry the recommended service interval for your ignition system, including your Volvo ignition coil.
Your Volvo engine might run rough, buck, surge, stall or even get poor fuel economy. These are signs that your ignition system might need servicing as they are potentially an ignition system problem.
When this happens, drive to the nearest Volvo dealership and have a qualified technician take a look around. Your Volvo engine might be in problem in the long run.
